Since the 1980’s, there has been a 60% increase in the birth of twins. This is due to many factors. So what are your odds of having more than one?

For the general public in the US, your chances are about 30.1 out of a thousand of having twins. That’s just slightly over 3%.

Some things increase yoru odds of having twins.

Age: Having children at age 45 gives you about a 17% chance of having twins, while births to mothers at 50 have about a 1 in 9 chance of having twins.

Residents of Massachusetts and Connecticut have higher incidences of twins than any other states (for unknown reasons). The rate is actually 25% higher than the rest of the country.

Taking fertility drugs or undergoing in-vitro fretilization (IVF) increases your chances of having twins. Taking Clomid can increase your chances of having twins to as high as 1 in 10. Having IVF brings the chances up to 1 in 2-3.

If the mother or the mother’s mother is a fraternal twin - there may be genetic predisposition to hyperovulation and twins ar emore likely. If the mother is herself a fraternal twin - the chances may be as high as 1 in 17. Sorry Dad - you have nothing to do with this.

If you already have one or more sets of fraternal twins your chances are higher. Also, women from Nigeria, and women who are overweight or very tall have an increased chance.

If the mother is of Chinese or Japanese descent, the chances of having twins are actually reduced.

These factors are only relevant for fraternal twins. Nobody knows the exact cause of identical twinning. Identical twins are random and equally distributed in every population. The rate of identical twinning is about 1 in 250. If the mother is an identical twin, there is no increase in the chances of having twins.

Most multiple births with sets greater than two (triplets and quadruplets) are the result of fertility medication. The odds of having triplets without fertility treatment is about 1 in 8,000. Quadruplets without fertility meds occur at a rate of about 1 in 730,000.

60% of triplets and as high as 99% of quadruplets are due to fertility treatment. In the past 20 years the rate of triplet birth has gone up 400%. This is most likely due to the use of reproductive technology such as IVF and fertility medication.
